Salary Range: $72,072.00 - $74,229.26

The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) consists of 30 specialized ICU beds dedicated to caring for critically ill adults aged 14 and older. Our unit maintains a balanced patient population of neuro and surgical patients, providing expert care for life-threatening conditions stemming from major elective and emergency surgeries, trauma, neurological incidents, and multi-organ failures.

The role of the SICU-Neuro ICU nurse is vital and requires an advanced skill set, including:

  • ICP monitoring via EVD and bolt
  • Spinal drains and catheters
  • Brain oxygen monitoring
  • Artic Sun therapy
  • Continuous EEG
  • Intra-arterial catheter management
  • Non-invasive cardiac output monitoring
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy
  • Reconstructive flap monitoring
  • Massive blood transfusion procedures

Nurses in our unit support crucial on-unit procedures, such as:

  • Placement of arterial lines
  • Placement of central lines
  • Placement of external ventricular drains and ICP monitors
  • SEPS drains
  • Bedside bronchoscopy
  • Abdominal washouts
  • Tracheostomy
  • PEG tube placement
  • Lumbar punctures
  • Chest tube placements
  • Pigtail drain insertions

The responsibilities you will undertake include:

  • Implementing physician orders and administering medications
  • Starting IVs, performing treatments, and documenting as required
  • Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests
  • Assessing patient needs and responses to care
  • Applying sound nursing judgment in care management
  • Providing primary and emergency care for injuries and illnesses
  • Collaborating with the nursing team to create patient-centered care plans
  • Guiding ancillary personnel while maintaining professional nursing standards

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a Diploma, Associate Degree, or Baccalaureate Degree
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Strong communication, prioritization, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Knowledge of quality improvement principles and problem-solving techniques
