Responsible for screening microscopic cytology slides for diagnostic purposes within the Cytopathology Department. Established protocols and procedures must be followed to ensure quality patient care. The laboratory staff member is under supervision of the Cytology Department Supervisor and will report to this person.
How you'll contribute
Perform microscopic evaluation of cytologic specimens: verify the identification of the specimen; thoroughly examine the cell sample microscopically; determine and record the adequacy and quality of the specimen; consider diagnostic possibilities, taking into account normal cellular patterns, premalignant changes, benign and malignant neoplasia, and cellular responses to therapeutic agents; review patient clinical data and use to compare microscopic findings
Prepare a final diagnosis using Bethesda terminology, enter data into the LIS system, report and sign out negative/normal gynecological specimens
Prepare a provisional diagnosis on specimens deemed abnormal upon review and refer those cases to the pathologist
Maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results and observes professional discretion with patient information
Complete assigned work consistently within acceptable time limits
Perform the required maintenance for their assigned Hologic Review Scope
Monitor worksheet for pending cases to ensure the timely reporting of cytology specimens
Sort slides in the appropriate bin based on case status
Adhere to established screening workload limits
Participate in continuing education activities
Perform data entry as required
Assist with preparations for CAP and other inspections
Perform required compliance tasks
Participate in other projects and perform other duties as needed
Who you are
Cytotechnology ASCP certification.
Florida state licensure.
Hologic ThinPrep certification.
Three years relevant cytology experience preferred. Applicants with QC Cytotechnologist and/or Supervisor experience are desirable.
Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of a cytopathology department including the collection, processing, and interpretation of cytopathology samples.
