At M Health Fairview our histology technicians work as part of a diverse team to produce high quality slides for microscopic evaluation. Our team members rotate through a variety of responsibilities including embedding, microtomy, routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, special stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and whole slide imaging. We serve a diverse patient population including pediatric and transplant patients and work with a variety of tissue types including kidney, liver, prostate, and G.I. biopsies, bone marrows, cell blocks, dermatology specimens, and routine surgical cases. The Histology Technician plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional laboratory services to diverse populations! The Histology Technician performs the work necessary for the production of microscopic preparations used for high complexity testing, performs routine and specialty procedures, correlates data based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting preparation results and performs quality control procedures within established parameters. This position also may be involved in assisting pathology staff in specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, ensuring efficient workflow as appropriate. Responsibilities/Job Description:
About The Job:
Histology Technicians follow established guidelines to obtain specimens and perform the work vital for the production of microscopic preparations used for high complexity testing and report results. Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
Assess integrity of specimens for testing/processing and verify correct patient identification information. Document and communicate lab test results thoroughly and accurately according to SOP. Perform and document maintenance procedures plus maintain adequate supplies. Seeks assistance appropriately for problems or unusual situations.
Consistently implement and enforce to the laboratory customer service standards. The standards include maintaining confidentiality, promoting teamwork, successful communication and conflict resolution. This may include:
Explaining test procedures when applicable to clinicians in a manner geared to gain their confidence and cooperation and relieve anxiety about the test.
Supports and adheres to laboratory SOPs, quality assurance, performance improvement and compliance programs recognizing trends and identifying when additional reporting, communication or other action is appropriate. Demonstrates proficiency and compliance with all regulatory agency policies.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
Associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or 60 semester hours with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include both) from a regionally accredited college or university. Qualified to work in a highly sophisticated laboratory as mandated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA '88).
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification such as HT (ASCP). If not certified at time of hire, must acquire certification within 12 months.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer one year of experience as a histology technician in a coordinated healthcare environment.
