Position Summary: The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for all front office functions including patient relations, appointment scheduling, telephone duties, patient registration, insurance verification, handling medical records in an electronic medical records system (EMR), filing, cashiering, and computer work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides support to the Patient Access Department and all TOMAGWA patients by:
Communicating with patients and providers.
Scheduling, canceling, and rescheduling patient appointments.
Reminding patients of upcoming appointments, and pre-visit planning.
Forwarding telephone calls appropriately and following up on return calls.
Checking-in patients and properly documenting registration by verifying and updating information in EMR as needed.
Insurance verification and verification of patient demographics, routing appropriate patients to the eligibility staff member, for screening and qualification for Sliding Fee Discount or other programs.
Checking-out patients and properly documenting follow-up appointments in EMR.
Copying and faxing duties.
Collecting co-pays and cash from patients, getting authorization on credit cards.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:
Required: High School Graduate or GED required.
Additional/Preferred Experience: 1 year of front office experience in a healthcare setting. Bilingual (English and Spanish) a plus.
Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos; Ability to document, with clarity, all information relevant to a patient's needs; Ability to effectively present information in small group situations to patients, Clinic staff, and the general public.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones, and copiers.
Travel and Standard Work Schedule: Standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is sometimes responsible for working hours outside of the standard work schedule. Some travel may be required to other TOMAGWA clinic sites in the area.
