We're growing rapidly and we're seeking motivated, patient focused, passionate coworkers to join us. We're currently seeking a Preoperative & Postoperative Nurse at our hospital in Leawood, KS. In this role, you'll provide nursing care for pre and post op patients and collaborate with the medical team to ensure a quality patient experience. You will also perform a variety of tasks in support of daily operations, including but not limited to:
Greets patients on arrival in the preoperative area
Identifies the patient, checks arm bank, and initiatives documentation in the patient's medical record
Assures patient personal belongings are properly labeled and placed in belongings bag
Asks patient about allergies and charts responses
Ensures drug allergies are displayed on a red allergy band attached to an extremity and red allergy sticker placed on the chart
Asks patient about last intake of food or drink
Checks chart for completed history and physical, appropriate laboratory work and notifies physician of any abnormal values
Checks physician's orders and performs procedures as ordered, including,
Administers appropriate medications per physician's orders
Applies TED hose and/or SCD sleeves as ordered.
performs pre-operative surgical scrub
Communicates with surgery and anesthesia about any problems which arise.
Verifies patient adherence to pre-op instructions regarding NPO status, medications, post-op transportation, and valuables.
Conducts the preoperative patient assessment according to procedure.
Completes preoperative contact to assess patient needs and provide pre-op education and instructions.
Completes preoperative checklist and signs his/her name.
Maintains an adequate supply of IV supplies, tape, wrappers, etc., used in the processing area.
Disposes of contaminated needle containers in red plastic (contaminated) trash bags.
Demonstrates care and responsiveness to the individual needs of the patient, family, physician, and hospital staff.
Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Director of Nursing.
Delivers care in a cost-effective manner for the patient and hospital.
Receives report from the anesthesia provider and Circulating Nurse that identifies the patient and immediate condition
Monitors post op vitals
Monitors post-op surgical site
When patient meets discharge criteria, the PACU Nurse:
Notifies anesthesia provider or surgeon to check patient.
Discontinues intravenous and foley catheter as applicable
Assures that all belongings are returned to patient
Gives patient written discharge instructions
Discharges patient in a wheelchair with a friend or relative to an automotive vehicle through the appropriate exit only
At the end of the dayshift, the PACU Nurse will:
Ensure recovery and preoperative areas are ready for the next day
Returns charts to medical records
Closes facility according to protocol
Administers medications as ordered by surgeon and anesthesia.
Recognizes and intervene appropriately with occurrence of potentially life threatening arrhythmias.
Promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational competencies and keeping licensure up to date.
Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods.
Maintain knowledge of and comply with established policies and procedures.
Participates in department meetings as required
Understands HIPAA regulations and maintains the strictest confidentiality at all times. Has read and understands the company's HIPAA Privacy Policy.
Complies with all regulatory requirements including OSHA, HIPAA, Ascentist Policies and Procedures and Ascentist Employee Handbook.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned/necessary.
Takes call as required by department
Qualified candidates will have current licensure in the State of Kansas as a Registered Nurse and prior work experience in Preoperative Nursing or in an acute care setting, a current BCLS certification, and the ability to obtain ACLS and PALS certification within 6 months of hire. Other qualifications include:
Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency with administering drugs and intervening appropriately regarding drug related problems.
Demonstrates competency in pre-op assessment, initiation of IV access, completion of documentation, initiation of post-op discharge instructions.
Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development related to care of pediatric, adult, and elderly patients.
Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in the utilization and care of equipment used in the perioperative area which includes oxygen delivery, pulse oximetry monitoring, cardiac monitoring, automatic and manual blood pressure monitoring, suction device, glucose monitor, Bair Hugger, EKG machine, etc.
Demonstrates proven verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to listen and understand to patients, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
Proven track record in reliability and dependability
Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks
Demonstrates effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills
Demonstrated ability to function independently without supervision while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail in an ever changing environment.
Proven track record in effectively planning, organizing and attention to detail
Ability to maintain a positive, courteous demeanor with all patients and colleagues
Demonstrates proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email (Outlook or Gmail)
Demonstrates understanding of and experience using an electronic medical record (EMR) systems
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to manage airway: i.e., jaw lift, endotracheal tube (ETT), Laryngeal Masky Airway (LMA), oral airway, nasal airway.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient information
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Proven track record in effectively planning, organizing and attention to detail
Demonstrates proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email (Outlook or Gmail)
Demonstrates understanding of and experience using an electronic medical record (EMR) systems
