The Role
As a Radiation Safety Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting medical facilities, research institutions, and industrial clients by overseeing and implementing radiation protection programs to guarantee compliance with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and best practices in radiation safety. This position is tailored for the San Francisco metro market, focusing on evaluating and managing occupational and public radiation exposure, conducting shielding evaluations, and developing robust safety protocols. You will also advise on facility design, serving as a subject matter expert in radiation protection and collaborating with Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs), regulatory agencies, and operational staff.
This position presents an opportunity to engage with One Physics' administration and management as we expand our presence in California, offering significant managerial visibility. Strong communication and leadership skills, as well as some managerial experience, are highly desirable.
What You'll Do
- Conduct audits and inspections of radiation safety programs to ensure compliance with NRC, state, and institutional regulations.
- Develop, implement, and review comprehensive Radiation Protection Programs and related procedures for various clients.
- Monitor, analyze, and interpret occupational radiation dosimetry data; provide consultation and corrective action plans for exposures exceeding ALARA thresholds.
- Assist with incident response involving potential or actual radiological exposure, contamination, or loss of radioactive material.
- Conduct shielding evaluations and design reviews for radiological facilities, including new construction and renovation projects.
- Perform area surveys, contamination checks, and exposure assessments for controlled and unrestricted areas.
- Consult with clients and regulatory bodies on licensing and registration of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices.
- Provide technical expertise during inspections by federal or state regulators and assist clients in preparing for and responding to audits.
- Deliver training and educational sessions on radiation safety, ALARA principles, emergency response, and regulatory compliance to staff and ancillary personnel.
- Serve on or support Radiation Safety Committees (RSCs) and provide technical guidance in decision-making processes.
- Maintain records, prepare documentation, and generate reports required by regulatory authorities and accrediting bodies.
- Support clients with radioactive waste handling, storage, and disposal, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
- Board certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP), or eligibility through completion of a recognized training program in health physics or a related field.
- Significant experience in radiation protection, compliance auditing, and interfacing with regulatory bodies in medical, industrial, or academic settings.
- Thorough understanding of NRC and state regulations, NUREG guidance, and pertinent ANSI, NCRP, and ICRP standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Proven initiative, professionalism, and organizational skills in project management and meeting deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities and adaptability to the unique challenges of clients.

Physical Requirements
This role can be physically demanding at times. You may need to maintain a stationary position for extended periods wearing a lead apron, lift test equipment, and move mobile diagnostic medical equipment between rooms. Drive times may exceed 60 minutes traveling to and between client facilities. The position requires the ability to lift 50 lb test equipment cases to a height of 3-4 feet, load and unload these cases from a vehicle, and transport equipment into various client facilities. Frequent communication with colleagues and clients is expected, along with daily operation of computers and electronic devices. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
