POSITION: Registered Dental Hygienist - Health Services

REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Health Services

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provide dental hygiene services within the Hartford Public School System. Work collaboratively with other dental staff, including dentists, certified dental assistants and clerical support personnel to organize schedule and complete the provision of dental treatment for the students at the school-based dental clinics. In addition, provide outreach and adjunct dental services as scheduled in non-dental clinic school sites.

DUTIIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

All responsibilities normally held by licensed dental hygienists including but not limited to the following:

1. Oral assessments.

2. Prioritize patients.

3. Prophylaxis.

4. Topical fluoride applications.

5. Oral hygiene instruction and follow-up.

6. Taking and processing dental radiographs.

7. Pit and fissure sealants.

8. Dietary analyses and nutritional counseling as applicable to dental health.

9. Triage emergencies: treat or refer to dentist.

10. Communicate with parents as necessary, to include informing parents of treatment provided, and future treatment that may be needed.

11. Assist dentist when dental assistant is not available.

Responsible for management of dental clinic within the school:

1. Maintain accurate records of school enrollment.

2. Organize clinic files.

3. Schedule patients.

4. Maintain guidelines, as per departmental policy (developed in collaboration with the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health).

5. Maintain confidentiality.

6. Obtain and maintain current insurance/Medicaid information.

7. Complete billing information, process as per departmental policy.

8. Order supplies, maintain inventory.

9. Maintain statistical information.

10. Prepare and complete all mandated reports.

Serve as lead person for school in school-based and community-based collaborations:

1. Provide clinical oversight of dental hygiene students while on rotation.

2. Attend and participate in professional and school staff meetings and In-service Programs

3. Provide In-service Programs to school/parent groups, as necessary.

Other duties as assigned by Coordinator of Health Services.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program.
Bachelor's/Master's degree preferred.
At least two years' clinical experience.
Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively with dental colleagues, teachers, other school personnel, students and parents.
Excellent management skills.
Bilingual/bicultural an asset.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: RDH, Current State of Connecticut Licensure, Current and valid CPR certification.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary in accordance with Hartford Federation of School Health Professionals . Appendix A, Salary Schedule 5A: ($45,745-$70,206).
