JOB SUMMARY:

In accordance with the philosophy and goals of OSS Health and within the scope of the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, the Registered Nurse (RN) will provide care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. The RN is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process within the standards, policies, procedures and guidelines of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

Education:

Graduate of accredited School of Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing or relevant field preferred.

Qualifications:

Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.

Current BLS certification; ACLS certification or ability to achieve within one year required.

Recent experience in a surgical, critical care, or same day surgery setting strongly preferred.

RN (New Grad) - recent graduate from accredited school of nursing with less than a year of experience; current PA Graduate Nursing permit required and obtainment of PA RN license within expiration date required.

RN I - minimum of (1) year of experience as a registered nurse required.

RN II - minimum of (3) years of experience as a registered nurse required.

Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient.

Must be able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.

Computer literacy a must.

Must possess professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.

Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care for assigned patients.

Monitors patient's physiological status during preoperative and postoperative phases.

Ensures appropriate patient preparation for operative procedure.

Documents accurately and completely pertinent assessments, interventions, and outcomes for patients in accordance with the documentation policies.

Verifies and implements physician/licensed independent practitioners' orders.

Maintains confidentiality of patient information as defined by HIPAA.

Administers medications according to OSS policies.

Initiates appropriate emergency procedures and administers life-support drugs/treatment under the direction of the physician.

Delegates duties and responsibilities to support staff according to job description.

Utilizes interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and teamwork between departments, health care workers, patients and families.

Assesses educational needs of patient / families and provides teaching as needed, including discharge instructions for outpatient procedures.

Maintains skills as determined through yearly competency testing.

Participates in ongoing educational activities through in-services, education days, self-study, or established educational programs.

Serves on committees and/or participates in changes of policy and procedures that affect the operation of services as documented.

Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Assists with the orientation of new hospital staff as assigned.

Assists in equipment maintenance and repair reporting.

Practices principles of safety and infection control as defined by OSS policies.

Consistently adheres to OSHA blood borne pathogen guidelines; applies universal precautions per OSS policies.

Accurately and efficiently utilizes incident reporting system within shift of occurrence.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIES:

No direct reports.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, physicians and the public. Ability to speak and understand English fluently. Proficiently utilize Indemand interpretation services as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate physical effort when working in patient care environment consisting of standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping. Moderate sitting and keyboarding along with fine and gross motor skills and manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Climate controlled environment with occasional periods of being outside. Exposed to blood borne pathogens, anesthetic gases, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients, bio-contaminated waste and possible unpleasant elements. Subject to stressful situations; occasional long or irregular work hours.
