At AWC, the Tax Compliance Manager is responsible for overseeing tax compliance activities to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role partners closely with Finance, Accounting, Payroll, and external advisors to manage risk, support audits, and continuously improve tax processes across the organization. This role is based in our Baton Rouge LA office and requires regular in office attendance.
How you'll make an impact:
Sales Tax Management
- Review and approve all sales tax-related write-offs or account adjustments, ensuring each has valid justification and full supporting documentation
- Prepare and file amended sales tax returns as needed, follow up on sales tax refund statuses monthly
- Review monthly reconciliations performed by tax accountant for all sales tax accounts to confirm accuracy, completeness, and validity of account balances
- Continuously work short-paid invoices caused by sales tax issues, including identifying root causes and developing a corrective action plan to prevent recurring discrepancies
- Conducts monthly reviews of high-value sales tax transactions to verify accurate tax calculations
- Partner with AR to resolve sales tax issues on customer invoices, including identifying customer-specific tax requirements and ensuring proper tax set-up and configuration of accounts
External Sales Tax Audits - Serve as primary audit liaison for any external audits
- Gather and deliver requested records such as invoices, exemption certificates, tax returns, reconciliations, and customer documentation
- Track audit deadlines, coordinate responses across departments, and ensure timely submission of all information requested by auditors
- Review auditor assessments, perform root-cause analysis for proposed adjustments, and prepare rebuttals or supporting evidence if disputes arise
- Communicate with auditors to clarify issues, provide additional documentation, and work toward minimizing audit exposure
- Create processes to prevent recurrence of audit findings and communicate updates to teams
Internal Sales Tax Audits - Conduct periodic self-audits to verify proper sales/use tax treatment, application of tax codes, and accuracy of exemption certificates
- Assess existing tax-related processes (certificate management, reporting workflows, tax configuration in ERP systems) and recommend improvements to reduce risk
- Ensure internal procedures reflect current regulatory requirements and update processes proactively to avoid compliance gaps
- Verify that AP is properly capturing all required use tax obligations on vendor invoices and purchases
Business License Management - Manage license registration and initial setup by identifying all city, county, and state licensing requirements for each new business location or division
- Track renewal deadlines for all business licenses across multiple jurisdictions to ensure timely filing
- Prepare and report required financial data (annual gross receipts) for each renewal period
- Ensure all business license documents are properly managed by receiving, logging, and distributing physical copies to the appropriate location, and maintaining organized, accessible records so each location's license is readily available for audits or regulatory review
Income & Franchise Tax - Serves as primary liaison during extension & final return preparation
- Prepare and deliver all financial support needed for state income and franchise tax filings. This includes creating and validating Excel workpapers, running financial and operational reports, reconciling data for accuracy and completeness, and assembling an audit-ready package for the external CPA firm to use in preparing tax returns
- Ensure paper returns are filed on time and verify all required tax payments are submitted and cleared
Property Tax - Oversee the annual property tax budget and provide accurate year-over-year estimates to the accounting department
- Prepare property tax accruals for accounting to post monthly and update these accruals as tax assessments become available
- Review, validate, and submit required documentation for property tax renditions prepared by third-party firms
- Coordinate with third-party firms to ensure timely payment of property tax bills, including verifying amounts before payment
- Analyze and question property tax assessments that appear unusual or inconsistent with prior years, budgets, or known asset changes
Management - Leads the Tax Accountant, ensuring exemption certificates are properly collected, validated, tracked, and maintained in an audit-ready state
- Supervises monthly sales tax reconciliations for three companies, reviewing accuracy and supporting issue resolution
- Provides guidance on complex tax questions, stepping in when higher-level judgment is needed while still encouraging independent problem-solving
- Ensure customer open exemption tax reports are worked accurately and efficiently with steady progress
Skills you'll need: - Minimum of 5 years of progressive tax compliance experience, preferably in a corporate environment
- Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations
- Experience reviewing tax filings, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to clearly communicate complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard accounting systems
- Must be a team player with the ability to work cross-functionally to achieve common goals
Here's what will set you apart: - Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation (preferred)
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Supervisory or lead experience within a tax or accounting function
- Experience supporting audits and working directly with taxing authorities
