Tool Grinder

Position Overview

We are seeking a master-level Tool Grinder with a deep background in tool making to support our precision machining operations. This is a specialized role requiring a professional who understands the physics of metal cutting-not just the operation of sharpening equipment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the custom grinding, shaping, and reconditioning of high-performance tooling, with a specific focus on lathe tool geometry. You will act as a central resource, collaborating across departments to ensure our equipment is running with the highest-quality custom edges possible.

Key Responsibilities

• Custom Tool Fabrication: Grind and shape specialized tools from blanks (HSS and Carbide) to meet unique production requirements.
  
• Lathe Tooling Expertise: Apply an advanced understanding of rake, clearance, and relief angles to optimize tool performance on lathes.
  
• Departmental Support: Interface with production managers and machinists to troubleshoot tooling failures and engineer geometry solutions for difficult-to-machine materials.
  
• Precision Inspection: Use optical comparators and precision measuring instruments to verify tool profiles against blueprints or technical requirements.
  
• Maintenance of Excellence: Manage the reconditioning of complex tooling, ensuring it returns to service at or above OEM specifications.

Required Qualifications

• Proven Experience: Minimum 5-10 years of dedicated experience in a tool-room environment.
  
• Specific Skill Set: This is not a mold-making or general maintenance position. We require a specialist who has spent years perfecting the art of tool grinding.
  
• Technical Knowledge: Complete fluency in how tool shape influences chip load, heat generation, and surface finish.
  
• Independence: Ability to work from sketches, blueprints, or verbal descriptions to create a finished tool without supervision.

Compensation / Pay Rate (Up to): $25.00
